"Something like that. Except we don't always hear voices."

"Or see flying dinosaurs. That only happens sometimes."

"But we can usually... read thoughts. I kind of like that, especially when there are civilians around, thinking about sex and stuff."

One of my favorite scenes from Halo: Last Light, or Spartans Gone Spelunking: The Book. Those of you who've read it will probably know which scene it is.

I liked that the book didn't go overboard with the smoother issue. It could've easily turned into exploitation, which I was fearing, but didn't quite cross that line (Olivia's loss of her smoothers in a very inconvenient situation notwithstanding). I'd always assumed even the regular ones lasted longer than a day or so, though. Regardless, I thought it was a neat bit of characterization for the Gammas how they were so comfortable with their unfortunate condition that they could casually joke about it.

The color palette and armor designs are based on the Last Light cover by Kory Hubbell, though I didn't try to emulate the painting technique and instead wanted to use a simple and defined style, almost like it's a screencap from an animation.

It's also my first time depicting Last Light-style SPI armor. I like some aspects of it more than others but overall it's an okay redesign IMO. It accentuates the wearer's figure better than the classic SPI which was more flabby looking in the torso region, though the new one comes across a bit too tight around the waist (I can't imagine it being very flexible with all those metal plates). On the other hand, all those added little indentations and grooves seem to serve no purpose at all (one would thing they'd want to avoid irregularities in the plating to maximize the stealth coating's effectiveness). The gaps in the chest armor are also rather inexplicable, and I prefer the forearms from the Ghosts of Onyx cover design. They have a nice streamlined quality to them with the three overlapping sections. As for the addition of the dorsal fins... I'm not so sure unless they serve some purpose. I always assumed those things had to do with MJOLNIR's onboard reactor, but it's always possible that the SPI suit in the Last Light cover is meant to be a new variant which includes the back pods for one reason or the other (perhaps the addition of a fusion pack).

Other works in my Last Light illustration series:
